On Wednesday evening, one of the most important sporting events of the year for the city took place at Klaipėda Švyturys Arena - the Klaipėda City Sports Awards. Several dozens of Klaipėda athletes who have made the city the most famous received awards and acknowledgements. This year, 15 main nominations were established, and the winners of these nominations were awarded one-of-a-kind bronze statuettes in the abstract shape of Klaipėda artist Alfonsas Lekavičius.
The awards also included a new and particularly significant nomination - "2023 Sports Event of the Year". It was won by the F2 Water Formula World Championship organised by F2 UNITED and ELITAZ.
Last summer, for the first time in history, the adrenaline-fuelled championship of the highest rank took place in Klaipėda's cruise ship terminal, in the harbour's shipping channel, and attracted thousands of spectators to watch it live.
The two-day championship attracted over 300,000 viewers to TV screens locally, while the global coverage reached staggering heights, with tens of millions of viewers around the world.
