Older radio listeners will undoubtedly remember the legendary M1 duo Tomaz and Maraz - Tomas Ališauskas and Marijus Berenis. Unofficially titled radio punks, the presenters later moved to TV screens as "Gods and Demons", and after a while, to the great sadness of their fans, went their separate ways. More recently, a huge advertising poster featuring the two of them has been put up in Vilnius' Savanorių ring road, encouraging drivers for more than 15 years not to "be goosebumps". It seemed to everyone that Tomaz and Maraz would never appear together again.
Today, however, the return of the duo is announced. Tomaz and Maraza will be one of the hosts of the M1 Music Awards on 3 December at Kaunas Žalgiris Arena. The duo will be given a number of important tasks at the event, but the most important of all is to return. In a way that only Tomaz and Maraz could do, and in a way that the audience remembers them.
"It was a truly iconic duo, I could tell stories from that time for hours. A lot of what I remember, a lot of what I don't remember. There was a lot of youthful maximalism, roofs were blown off, not always knowing what we were doing, but always believing that this was the way to do it. At that time, we were creating trends and fashions - we were doing what we wanted, experimenting a lot, and never knowing how it would all turn out," smiles Berenis.
He says that at that time commercial radio stations were just emerging, so Tomaz and Maraz had to make their own rules.
"We were fed up with devils, so we did whatever came to mind. If we saw that something wasn't working on air, we'd immediately come up with new things. I remember it as a time when we were good friends - we used to spend the night at each other's place, and we used to rhyme in the kitchen until dawn, and we used to party. We didn't think we were so popular until some event at the cinema. Fans, especially female fans, were ripping our clothes off, attacking us in droves, so the organisers provided four security guards. We felt like real rock stars," Marazas recalls with a laugh.
The relationship between the two men is still excellent and they meet every day at the Radio House. M.Berenis works at the radio station Lietus, T.Ališauskas at M1 PLIUS, but he doesn't hide the fact that he doesn't see those legendary "till dawn" anymore.
Marijus says that there have been more than one proposal for the duo to return to the airwaves. Regularly, about every five years. But so far, no one has succeeded.
"When the organisers of the M1 Music Awards called me and asked me this question, I just laughed - you're starting from the wrong end. If you can persuade Tomaz, I'll be happy to join in. And, to be very honest, I have no idea how they did it! So here we are, Tomaz and Maraz are back!", says Berenis.
THAT historic day - December 3rd, Kaunas Žalgiris Arena, M1 Music Awards. The organisers hint that this is not the only legendary radio couple that will be revived on that festive evening. Tickets, which will soon be on sale at a steep price, will be sold at Tickets.lt.
