After the announcement of the unusual blue carpet dress code for the M1 Music Awards, which is rarely used in Lithuania, stylists, designers and image makers working with celebrities have not hidden the fact that they have received a lot of questions about what it looks like in reality. We will have a chance to see that reality on 3 December at Kaunas Žalgiris Arena, when all the cream of the entertainment business will gather for the awards.
Hundreds of celebrities will showcase their best (and possibly not so best) creative glam looks and bathe in photographers' flashes. On 3 December, from 17:00 to 19:00, you can watch the VIP guests shine on the blue carpet live on 15min. The special show will be hosted by the famous celebrity stylist Milda Metlovaitė and M1 Youth Service hooligans Joris Bačiulis and Gustu Ramonas.
But what does "creative glam" really mean? How do you dress for the evening so you don't get passed by? What are the biggest dos and don'ts of this dress code? This is what Milda Metlovaitė, one of the presenters of the M1 Music Awards blue carpet broadcast, has already told us recently. Today, Kamilė Bukauskaitė, founder of The Pose Brand, stylist and designer, shares her opinion. She is famous not only for her own distinctive and striking style, but also for designing costumes for the most famous Lithuanian artists, their photo shoots and the stage.
"Creative glam is a look that blends luxury and glamour with artistic, unexpected and individual elements. It's like a combination of fashion+art+sparkle. This code is a great opportunity not only to dress nicely, but also to convey a subtly (or not necessarily) encoded message or to draw attention to a topic that is currently topical," she explains.
"Creative glam can be a workout, but...
Kamilė suggests a "glam" aesthetic, characterised by sequins, silk, satin, velvet and other luxurious, glamorous fabrics. These fabrics are suitable for both men's and women's eveningwear.
"Well, get creative when it comes to completing your look. Maybe it could be mega-sized jewellery, unusual, slightly weird make-up, the effect of wet hair and runny make-up instead of Hollywood curls, eccentric nail art, an interesting headpiece. Or, for example, a suit or a dress with very elegant, classic shapes, made of an unusual fabric - denim, leather, fur, metallic fabric. Or maybe a bulky, flared silhouette in classic wool? This is also the perfect place for garments with bold lettering, so why not pull out the good old tried-and-tested combination of a tulle skirt and a T-shirt with ironic lettering?", the designer muses.
Asked what would be "totally out of place" at the M1 Music Awards night, she says: "I wouldn't want to talk about such intolerable extremes as casual dress on the blue carpet. Unless there's a message encoded in it. Then a tracksuit can be appropriate - if there is a purpose, a meaning and an essence of why it is chosen. But while a classic suit or elegant dress would be fine for a regular red carpet, creative glam will make you try harder."
Play by the rules or make up your own?
According to Bukauskaitė, the "black tie", which is usually used at formal events, is a very strict, rule-governed code. So whether you've hit it is clear as day. But creative glam is a direction, a hint, a keyword. The reason for success is your interpretation. It's always easier and safer to play by the rules, but it's riskier but more fun to make up your own.
"Don't get distracted or distracted - look at image building as a game and as a way to explore yourself and your environment. An image evokes emotions not only for you but also for those who look at you. What feeling would you like to evoke? Could this be a key question when considering choices? For women, I recommend trying out custom make-up. You won't get away with just looking pretty with glamour, of course, but you won't surprise anyone either. For men, it's a great opportunity to try accessories - brooches, neck jewellery, headgear, sequinned ties and so on," says the founder of The Pose Brand.
Kamilė urges you to keep in mind the colour of the carpet on which the stars will be posing for the photographers. This also means thinking about the colour of the costume.
"You need to think about what colours will look good against a blue background and what colours won't. A blue suit for a blue background? Why not. After all, it's creative glam - maybe blending in with the carpet was the guest's idea?", smiles K. Bukauskaitė.
